Fresh Flower Bouquet: How To Make Them Last

Here it is. The unexpected buzz in the door and bouquet handed off to you with the cute little card.

You immediately rush to grab a vase and while filling it up with water you already started feeling guilty for the flowers that will die in a few days. And you can’t help but wonder “If only I could make then last longer.“

Well, you can! And you will! I believe in you!

I got you! Here are some tips on how to keep your bouquet alive for more than two days.

  1. First Things First

Take off all the plastic/paper wrapping, cut all the wires or strings that may hold the bouquet together. Flowers need room to breathe. You don’t like being slammed in the BART at early morning. Well, your flowers too! They will wilt faster in the constraint environment.

  2. CUT YO STEMS

Not yours literally, but cut the flower stems at a 45-degree angle before putting them in the water. This will assure that the stem will absorb more water.

  3. Flower Food

Yes! Flowers need to eat too! Give those puppies some yummy flower food! You can buy in at the flower market or flower shop or order on amazon. I even have a homemade recipe for you:

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon bleach

2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice

1 quart lukewarm water

Here is the science behind this. Sugar feeds the flowers, bleach prevents bacteria growth, and the acidic citrus adjusts the pH levels and lukewarm water helps the stems drink faster.

4. Cut off any leaves below water level

Leaves left in the water will promote bacteria to spread and your flowers will die faster.

5. Keep out of the direct sun.

Direct sunlight causes flowers to die more quickly.

6. Change out the water every 2 days

As you could already guess it helps to control what? Bacteria growth! Also, make a fresh cut every time you change out the water.

There you go! You are a pro now! Go make those flowers last for weeks!

*Note! Some flowers are actually very delicate and not made to last for a very long time. I know bummer…
